Spring and Mother's Day are here! We wish you lots of sunshine and bright smiles!

But before we start the season of frizzy iced drinks and lots of mother’s day chocolates, we want to help you with some tips to protect your teeth from the acid attacks that often come with these foods and drinks.

Unfortunately, acid attacks are caused by common things we consume on a daily basis, from drinks to fruits and veggies. These create acid in our mouths, that stays on our teeth and causes dental erosion. Losing the enamel on our teeth is the main cause of pain and sensitivity.

Whilst we don’t want to stir you away from enjoying your favourites, especially fruits and veggies, here are some tips from Dr Radia on how to protect your teeth from acid attacks:

  • Brush twice daily, thoroughly, two minutes at a time to prevent acid build-up
  • Floss at least once a day to remove food debris from between the teeth
  • Replace as many drinks as you can with water - water causes no damage and helps saliva production, which naturally cleans the teeth and restores the mouth’s PH balance
  • Use a straw when drinking anything that causes acid (coke and all carbonated or frizzy drinks, fruit juices). If you can’t use a straw, avoid keeping the drink in your mouth and swishing it around, instead consume it quickly. The more the liquid stays on your teeth, the more acid and erosion it creates.
  • Avoid using off-the-shelf whitening toothpaste, as it can contain abrasive ingredients. Instead, book an appointment, and we will apply a professional whitening gel that protects your teeth whilst whitening (we have special offers this month on our whitening treatments)
